There is a great demand for 2 carat diamond engagement rings – but do people really know that they are getting and what they are paying for?

The diamond market has two sides to it. The first is very simple – there is a price per carat and the price you get quoted in one place will be pretty similar to that offered in another. And to keep things simple, since 1913 a carat has been standardised at 1/5 gram or 200 mg.

The other aspect is very complicated. The size of a diamond obviously affects the price. But then you have to add a rarity factor to it and this is where interpretation starts. A quick look online will tell you that a 2 carat diamond is more than the cost of two diamonds each of one carat. This is because a two carat diamond is rarer and therefore more sought after.

The next thing which needs to be taken into account is the cut and shape. The cut of a diamond does not affect its weight, but it does affect how large it looks and also how pretty it is. One of the most popular cuts of diamond is the 54 facet round brilliant cut. This is a wonderfully bright cut which is why it is such a popular choice. A diamond cut with larger flat sides will sometimes look larger than a diamond which is cut to look brilliant.

So the look is defined by the cut, but the shape is a different thing again. The shape of a diamond affects how large it looks.

So if you are buying a 2 carat diamond engagement ring there are lots of things which you need to consider.

Below are a few questions which you should ask yourself before you choose between the designs of 2 carat diamond engagement rings:

•	Is size the most important aspect to the diamond?
•	How much brighter will a round cut diamond be?
•	How much smaller will a round cut diamond appear?
•	Does the fitting need to enhance the diamond, or will an intricate ring detract from the diamond?

And the most important questions of all:
•	Which of the 2 carat diamond engagement rings would my fiancée choose?

Discover what your money can get you.
I have chosen a couple of items which are currently on offer with savings of between $20,000 and $30,000 ! These are also good examples of the different stone cuts: Diamond Engagement Ring (GIA Certified 2.05 ct center) and Platinum Emerald Cut Diamond Ring (GIA Certified 2.06 ct center)
